Good callers with great questions yesterday! I was glad to hear some workplace contests are going strong as well. Here are some recaps on fun facts from the show:

-Cholesterol may not be all bad! Studies show it actually helps build muscle and strength and the upper limits might need to be redefined anyway to 250 instead of 200. They are finding just as many health issues in people with low cholesterol (under 150) as in those with high cholesterol (over 250).
-Anxious people with heart disease are twice as likely to die than their mellow peers.
-A link has been found between cancer and genetically modified foods! Write your congressman!
-Resveratrol found in grape skins, raspberries and mulberries has been shown to fight cancer.
-Twinkies are poison as are many other junk foods, yet they get cheaper as real food gets more expensive every year due to the farm bill that favors corn, soybeans, and wheat. Write your congressman and tell him/her to support bills that support nutrient rich foods instead!
-Hyperplasia (cell multiplication) of muscle and fat has been show to occur in adults when previously thought impossible. The best way to cause this in muscle is through high intensity exercise and heavy negative loading. The best way to cause this in fat tissue is to keep stuffing yourself by overeating!

To recap the show, here are some of the points discussed:
-Low back pain affects almost everyone and can be fixed! There are many causes, but strengthening your core and increasing your hamstring flexibility and strength can be a good start to permanent healing.

-Knee injuries from skiing are often caused by an imbalance between the quad and hamstring muscles. Your strength ratio should be as close as 1:1, but most people are way too strong in their quads when compared to their hamstrings.

-Foods that are high in nutrient density are more satisfying as well. Researchers found that people who ate nutrient dense foods like dark greens and lean meat ate 300-500 calories less each day and felt more satisfied.

-Green tea has many immune benefits and can be a potent fat burner.

-Interval training has been shown to DOUBLE endurance in as little as 2 weeks with people who are already fairly fit! Results are even better in those who aren't so fit.

-Excessive alcohol not only makes it impossible to burn fat, it can also lead to many forms of cancers and brain damage. Women are even more susceptible than men.

-About half of all doctors regularly prescribe placebos. 96% believe that placebos can have a real therapeutic effect. Your brain really is that powerful!
